what to wear when…in a ghanaian fairy tale (requested by eccentriccuttlefish and annielaurie).

examples: fɛfɛw baa ɛmpene owuo (the beautiful woman who refused to die), kuafo mybrow na saman (farmer mybrow and the fairies), quarcoo bah-boni (the bad boy)

the akan call [ghanaian fairy tales] akanse stories; the ewe, gli; the ga, adesa; and the wali, h’lima.
in most [ghanaian] tales, animals and objects are the characters. they may represent human beings. very often, the role of each animal in a tale depicts its nature and character. for instance, if the tale chosen is about stealing, a cat plays the role of the thief. if it is about bullying, a lion is chosen.
the following animals are usually mentioned in ghanaian tales: adanko (hare), akyekyerɛ (tortoise), agyinamowa (cat), kisi (rat), ɔtwe (antelope), kurotwamansa (leopard), awendade (lion), son (elephant), ɔtwea (dog), kɔtɔ (crab), anoma (bird), abowatena (snake), nkran (ant), prako (pig), ampan (bat), etc…the main character in most tales is ananse (spider), who is always the hero.other characters in [ghanaian fairy tales] are gods, ancestors, death, hunters, rivers, mountains, trees, and so on…each of these characters has a special role to play…for instance, when the gods, ancestors, and death appear in a tale, they do so to emphasize the importance of our taboos.

they outlawed this move just because she was the only woman who could do it.
Surya Bonaly was infamous for (among other things) doing aone blade backflip in the 1998 Olympics, and is the ONLY figure skater who’s ever pulled that off. Not just the only woman, the only figure skater PERIOD. There’s like all ofthree Olympic-class male skaters who did backflips in their routines, and NONE of them could do it one blade.
But wait, there’s more.
Backflips were banned from the 1976 Olympics onward on the official justification that skating jumps are supposed to be landed on one blade, whereas backflips are landed on both blades. The unofficial justification was it was too dangerous, both to the athlete and to the rink — if you didn’t land it perfectly, you could not only break your ankle, but also punch THROUGH the ice surface.
Surya Bonaly was openly contemptuous of the figure skating judges, because they were a bunch of openly racist white men who always screwed her over by giving her lower scores than she deserved. That one-blade backflip was her ultimate FUCK YOU! to the Olympics judges, because she took an “illegal” backflip and made it legal by landing it on one blade. Pretty much DARING them to mark her down for being epic awesome and pulling a move that their precious coddled white girls didn’t have the guts to even think about.
They did, of course. White racism knows no bounds. But she utterly owned them with that move.
not only did she do a fucking backflip and land, she landed then went right into a triple loop. like holy fuck

badass.

Also, whites didn’t end slavery. Abraham Lincoln didn’t care about Black people and slavery until he knew that slavery was a very important economic part of the South, so he threatened to end slavery if they didn’t surrender because then the Confederate states would crumble, which is mostly what happened after they had to surrender. Slavery wasn’t necessary over after the Emancipation Proclamation, either. He only freed the slaves in the South. Sharecropping happened so after, which is basically slavery but only with drowning in debt so the Black families could become dependent on the white folk they’re on the land and work for.

Goodbye honky.

For whites that were still throwing their shit in the streets in the early 1900s. YOU OWN NOTHING but the Manifest Destiny BS and Racism.
